Cleaner Candles Handcrafted by a Grade 7 Student Entrepreneur in Toronto
Flicker Candle is run by Lillian, a North York Grade 7 student who grew up in a health-food-industry household and noticed something missing from the candle isle: real transparency about what’s in the fragrance. Every candle is poured by hand in small batches from coconut-apricot wax with verified CMR-free fragrance oils and essential oils, using sustainably sourced wood wicks and ingredients sourced in Ontario. Keep your air clear of soot, phthalates, paraben and other carcinogenic, mutagenic and reproductive (CMR) toxins.

Why a Grade 7 Student Started a Candle Company
Lillian founded Flicker Candle because she felt the industry-standard “phthalate and paraben free” label on most clean-candles options still wasn’t telling the whole story. Her goal is to make CMR-free (Carcinogen, Mutagen, Reproductive-toxin free) fragrance the new standard for candles. She meticulously reviews the Material Safety Data Sheets from fragrance producers to select only scents completely absent of the long list of CMR toxins often buried within them.

Unique Aesthetic
Lillian’s passion is for art, and aims to bring elegant and unique presentation to her candle creations. Most container candles advertise their label prominently on the side of their jar or tin; Lillian seeks to offer home decorations which draw the eye to their shape and color, and not to branded text. Our wood wicks produce a wider flame than conventional cotton braids, along with a subtle fireplace-like crackling sound.
Presently we offer a 10 oz amber jar along with 8 oz and 4 oz rose gold tins without side-facing labels, lending aesthetic ambiance to your space. Lillian continues to hunt for unique aesthetic vessels that push the envelope on container candles.

Coconut-Apricot Wax
The cleanest natural wax available. Coconut wax burns with almost no soot, 15% slower than soy wax, and has the best scent throw. Apricot wax adds structural stability and a smooth finish.

Clean Fragrance Oils
Formulated to be free of all carcinogens, mutagens, and reproductive toxins — not just phthalates and parabens.

Wood Wicks
Produce a wider flame and a gentle crackling sound as they burn — a different sensory experience than a standard cotton wick.

Vegan & Sustainable
Plant-derived waxes with no additives. Coconut palms are a high-yield renewable crop that bears fruit for up to 80 years without being cut down – a lower-impact alternative to GMO monoculture wax crops.

FAQ
What is coconut-apricot wax, and why use it instead of soy or paraffin?
It’s a blend of coconut wax and apricot wax. Coconut wax is the cleanest burning wax available. It produces virtually no soot and its hot scent throw is unparalleled among natural waxes. It also burns about 15% longer than comparable soy candles, offering more value per candle. Apricot wax is blended in for structural stability and a pearlescent finish. Both are plant-derived and vegan.
What does “CMR-free” mean?
CMR stands for carcinogenic, mutagenic, and reproductive toxins. Lillian formulates Flicker Candle’s fragrances to be free of these substances, going further than the standard “phthalate and paraben free” label most natural wax brands use.
Are fragrance oils safe?
We meticulously review our suppliers Material Safety Data Sheets to uphold the highest non-toxic standard in the industry. Our fragrances are safe to breath but not to ingest, and should always be kept away from children and pets. It is important to note that some people, especially those with respiratory conditions, may be sensitive to strong aromas generally.
Are scented candles pet safe?
Cats and dogs have highly sensitive olfactory systems and lower tolerances to volatile organic compounds in both essential oils and fragrance oils. Scented candles should only be burned in well ventilated rooms in pet households. Always provide a room exit for pets in case they are overwhelmed. Watch for signs of wheezing or watering eyes and stop if irritations persist. Some scents are particularly toxic for cats and should be avoided altogether. Please see these veterinary resources for a list of scents to avoid and to prefer.
Can I customize my candle order?
Yes, we accept custom scent and container requests. We aim to offer unique aesthetics and scents in the clean candle market and welcome your feedback into how we can better satisfy your candle desires. Production time varies with selected scents and vessels as we search for suppliers. Note that coconut wax candles take a week to cure to achieve the best scent throw upon burning. Email waxpoeticboutique@gmail.com to discuss lead time and pricing.
Do you offer free shipping?
Yes, local orders over $30 ship free – just one 10 oz jar or two medium tins will clear that threshold. Enter your postal code at checkout to view free shipping thresholds further afield. We only ship within Canada.
Where are the candles made?
